General information about anesthesia:
We perform almost all surgical procedures under general anesthesia. General anesthesia today guarantees the highest level of patient safety and a rapid recovery after the operation. During the procedure, you will be in a calm, sleep-like state. Our anesthesiologists ensure this, remaining by your side throughout the entire operation. You will be completely unaware of the procedure and will be awake and oriented again just minutes later. Even after major surgeries, you will be able to spend the evening back in your own home.

General anesthesia today guarantees the highest level of patient safety and a rapid recovery after the operation. During the procedure, you will be in a calm, sleep-like state. Our anesthesiologists ensure this and will remain by your side throughout the entire operation. You will be completely unaware of the procedure and will be awake and oriented again just minutes later. Even after major procedures, you will be able to spend the evening back in your own home.
How is that achieved?
Anesthesia serves to eliminate consciousness, pain perception, and defensive reflexes such as swallowing and coughing, and to reduce muscle tension throughout the body.
You will receive very safe and precisely controlled medications of the latest generation through an IV line in your arm. This will allow you to fall asleep peacefully, gently, and with exceptional safety under the close monitoring of the anesthesiologist. Our state-of-the-art anesthesia machines allow for continuous monitoring and precise control of all relevant bodily functions, especially circulation, respiration, and deep sleep. Minutes after the operation, you will awaken pain-free and oriented. After a further period of rest, you will be able to get up with assistance and have something to drink and eat. Your recovery room nurse will be there to support you and provide you with warm tea and crackers.
Depending on the procedure, you will remain in our care for 1.5 to 4 hours and will be continuously monitored by our recovery room nurses. Thanks to our modern anesthetics and sophisticated pain management, side effects such as circulatory problems or nausea have become rare – should these symptoms occur, we will, of course, treat them promptly. Before your discharge home, the doctors will check on your well-being and give you instructions for how to behave at home and how to use your pain medication.

The anesthesia consultation
As a patient, you can make an important contribution to a safe and gentle anesthesia by providing the anesthesiologist with information. The pre-operative consultation on the day of surgery serves this purpose.
In case of serious general illnesses or physical limitations, please contact our dedicated anesthesia consultation . Please speak to our surgical registration staff in person to arrange this.
This applies especially to the following diseases:
- Diabetes, high blood pressure, epilepsy, severe lung diseases or other conditions that impair physical performance.
- Body weight with a BMI greater than 35 (usually corresponds to over 100 kg).
- If you are over 65 years old and have additional health conditions (especially physical limitations).
Please inform the anesthesiologist precisely about any serious illnesses you suffer from and in which activities your physical capacity is limited.
- A list of the medications you need to take
- Your allergy card, anesthesia card, pacemaker card or similar identification documents.
- Findings from previous and current studies, e.g. from a cardiologist or pulmonologist, hospital or rehabilitation clinic discharge reports, surgical reports, histology/cytology
- A brief medical report from the family doctor
- Current lab results are required for the following procedures: myomectomy, endometrial ablation, TVT (TVL) for urinary incontinence, Botox injection, and pelvic floor surgery (prolapse). Required values:
- Erythrocytes, leukocytes, thrombocytes, hematocrit, hemoglobin
- Potassium, creatinine, gamma-GT
For a laparoscopy, you should also bring the following:
Cholinesterase value (CHE)
Suction after miscarriage or abortion:
Blood type
In the case of respiratory diseases:
Lung function test
In cardiovascular diseases
A recent resting ECG
